The Boat Race; how to get there and where to watch the action
Come and join in the fun as, once again, Oxford University and Cambridge University go head to head in another of London's oldest sporting events. The first race between the two boat clubs was in 1829, and, with the exception of the two world wars, has been held annually since 1856. So why not immerse yourself in the festival atmosphere as you join the crowd in cheering on the team you support. The women will race just before the men's event.
Where is The Boat Race held and which are the best spots to watch?
The Boat Race takes place between Putney and Mortlake, which is a 4.25 miles stretch of the River Thames sometimes referred to as 'The Champions Course'. You can watch the race from either side of the River, with Putney Bridge, Craven Cottage and Chiswick Bridge particular areas to note if you are looking for a spot with a good view of the race.
How to get to the best viewing spots?
As with all popular sporting events getting a good view of the race can be difficult considering the many thousands of people trying to get to the best spot on the river. Our advice is to get there early and in style by booking a luxury private car; reserve a table at one of the many popular pubs and restaurants along the route, and enjoy lunch whilst you watch the spectacle of some of the World's best rowers competing for the coveted Boat Race Trophy.
Public transport is an option as there are numerous London Transport buses running to the key viewing points. Alternatively you can take a tube to Putney or Chiswick for the start or finish. However, as 250,000 people descend on the Thames for this event each year, it is highly advisable to pre-plan your day. To avoid high levels of congestion and possible delays to public transport , for a hassle free journey, book an affordable luxury car service to take you to and from the Boat Race.
